Back-to-School 2026: 5 Questions Every Broward Parent Should Ask About Their Child's Transportation

5 min read

School starts tomorrow: Monday, August 10, 2026: in Broward County!

If your child’s transportation plan is still uncertain, act now. A safe and dependable ride requires more than finding the closest van or searching online for “school bus service near me.” You need clear answers about eligibility, driver standards, daily procedures, communication, and backup support.

Broward County Public Schools has published important requirements for the 2026–27 school year. Private schools and independent transportation providers may follow different processes. Your responsibility is to confirm exactly how your child will travel to and from school before the first bell.

Use these five questions to make a confident decision.

1. Is My Child’s Transportation Actually Confirmed?

Never assume that submitting a request means your child has a guaranteed seat.

For eligible BCPS students, families must complete the District’s Register 2 Ride process. BCPS required registration by June 26 to guarantee a bus assignment for the first day of school. Registrations submitted between June 27 and July 10 were scheduled for assignment no later than the second week.

Registrations submitted after July 10 are processed in the order received. That means a last-minute request may not result in a confirmed ride tomorrow.

Check these items immediately:

  • Is your child fully registered for transportation?

  • Has a route, stop, and pickup time been assigned?

  • Is the information visible in the FOCUS Parent Portal?

  • Has the school confirmed your child’s transportation status?

  • If your child is new to BCPS, do you have the required student ID?

BCPS states that newly enrolled students must receive a student ID before registering for transportation. Families may also need to allow several days for enrollment information to appear in the transportation system.

If you are waiting on a district assignment, contact your child’s school and BCPS transportation support immediately. Do not send your child to an unsupervised stop without confirming the plan.

For families using a private provider, ask for written confirmation that includes the route type, pickup address, destination, estimated time, and first service date.

2. Who Is Driving My Child?

The person behind the wheel is the most important part of the transportation decision.

Ask whether drivers are professionally trained, properly vetted, and experienced with student transportation. A clean vehicle is important. A qualified and responsible driver is essential!

At Straight A Student Transport, safety is the operating standard. We are a registered vendor for the Dade and Broward County School Boards. Our transportation model is built around vetted drivers, professional training, responsible student care, and consistent procedures.

Ask every transportation provider:

  • Are drivers screened through comprehensive background checks?

  • Are driving records reviewed before assignment?

  • Do drivers receive student-management and emergency-response training?

  • Are drivers trained to follow pickup and drop-off procedures?

  • Who supervises the driver and handles concerns?

  • What happens if the assigned driver is unavailable?

You should also ask how the provider protects student privacy. Drivers should receive only the information necessary to complete the route safely and efficiently.

Do not accept vague answers. “We have good drivers” is not a safety protocol. Request specific information about vetting, training, supervision, and accountability.

3. Is the Vehicle Appropriate, Safe, and Maintained?

Your child’s transportation environment should be clean, orderly, and designed for student travel.

A private student transportation provider may use passenger vans rather than traditional yellow school buses. That is why you must ask about the vehicle itself and the company’s maintenance process.

Confirm the following before service begins:

  • What type of vehicle will transport your child?

  • How many students will ride on the route?

  • Are seat belts available and required?

  • How frequently are vehicles inspected and maintained?

  • Is the vehicle clean and free of visible hazards?

  • Is there a documented process for mechanical problems?

  • Does the provider have a backup vehicle or alternate plan?

The vehicle should be appropriate for the route, passenger count, and age of the students. It should also support safe entry and exit at each location.

Your child should never be rushed into or out of a vehicle. Safe loading and unloading require attention, a controlled environment, and clear communication between the driver and the family.

4. How Will I Know When My Child Is Picked Up and Dropped Off?

Reliable communication is not an extra feature. It is part of responsible student transportation.

Ask how the provider will notify you when your child is picked up, when the vehicle is delayed, and when the student reaches the destination. Clear notifications help you manage work, family responsibilities, and unexpected changes without guessing.

Straight A Student Transport provides real-time destination notifications to help parents stay informed throughout the trip. This added visibility gives you a clearer understanding of the route status and helps reduce uncertainty during busy mornings and afternoons.

Ask for details about:

  • Pickup confirmation notifications

  • Arrival notifications

  • Delay notifications

  • Changes to the estimated arrival time

  • The preferred communication method

  • Emergency contact procedures

  • Who receives notifications if you cannot answer

BCPS families can also use the District’s free Here Comes the Bus service. The District says the service provides bus location updates and estimated arrival notifications. Families should use school code 87599 when registering.

For the 2026–27 school year, BCPS states that Here Comes the Bus will be available by the second week of school. This service applies to eligible registered BCPS bus riders. It does not replace the need to confirm a private transportation provider’s own communication process.

5. What Happens When the Schedule Changes?

Your transportation plan must work beyond a perfect routine.

School schedules change. Parents work late. Children have activities. Vehicles experience unexpected problems. Emergencies happen. Ask what support is available when your original plan no longer works.

Confirm whether the provider offers:

  • Round-trip daily routes

  • Morning-only transportation

  • Afternoon-only transportation

  • Door-to-door pickup and drop-off

  • Emergency pickup assistance

  • Alternate authorized contacts

  • Backup coverage for driver or vehicle disruptions

  • Support when a parent is delayed

Straight A Student Transport offers flexible service options for Broward families, including door-to-door drop-off, round-trip routes, one-way routes, and emergency pickups. These options help families create a transportation plan that fits their actual work and school responsibilities.

If you are looking for private school transportation Broward families can depend on, begin by confirming whether your child’s school provides transportation directly or allows families to use an independent provider. Ask the school office about campus drop-off rules, authorized locations, and any restrictions for third-party transportation.
